Liraglutide questions to take along

Look at the money

Ask about the product and the reason for care.

“We take insurance” leaves a lot unanswered. Tell your plan which medicine you mean and why it is being considered.

What to check

  • Ask for the plan’s medicine list.

Your plan’s medicine list is called its formulary; being eligible for coverage does not make every product covered.

  • Ask about the approval step.

With prior authorization, coverage of the prescription depends on getting the plan’s agreement to pay for the medicine first.

  • If you have Medicare, separate diabetes from weight care.

Medicare drug coverage for liraglutide used for type 2 diabetes depends on the plan’s medicine list, as of September 26, 2026.

Medicare’s regular drug benefit does not cover liraglutide for weight loss alone; liraglutide is also left out of Medicare’s separate temporary programme for certain weight medicines.

As of September 26, 2026, that programme runs from July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027. For medicines on its list, the monthly payment is $50 for people who qualify.

That programme does not change the answer about liraglutide for weight loss.

A note before moving on

Questions for the plan

An approved medicine that copies a brand-name product is called a generic.

Is the exact brand or generic on my plan’s list? What records are needed? What would I pay?

If the request is declined, ask the plan to explain its review process and what the prescriber can submit.
